Tottenham stuttered to a 0-0 draw at Brentford on Saturday, handing bitter rivals Arsenal the advantage in the race for fourth in the Premier League.
Arsenal defeated Manchester United 3-1 earlier in the day to open a three-point lead over Antonio Conte s men, and Spurs inability to follow suit prevented them going ahead of the Gunners on goal difference.
Spurs offered little attacking threat during a first half that Brentford enjoyed the better of, with their set-piece prowess causing the visitors problems and bringing about a great chance as Ivan Toney hit the woodwork.
The contest was more open in general after the interval but still the best opportunities fell the way of Brentford, who again hit the frame of the goal through Toney and only failed to clinch a …

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is confident that Gabriel Jesus can reach an even higher level following his magnificent start to life at the club.
Having scored twice and contributed two assists in a 4-2 win against Leicester City a week ago, the Brazilian was back at it in the Gunners routine 3-0 victory over Bournemouth, playing a key role in the opening goal before teeing up Martin Odegaard s second.
While Arsenal s number nine was unable to get on the scoresheet, seeing a second-half effort chalked off after a VAR review, his all-round display offered further encouragement to the Gunners supporters.
Arteta is understandably delighted with the contribution of his new leading man, but believes he still has room to improve.
Those individual actions make…

Investigations into Manchester City s alleged financial misconduct have taken too long , believes LaLiga chief Javier Tebas.
The Premier League champions have been charged by the competition with over 100 rule breaches in relation to their financial dealings following an investigation lasting Wober four years.
City have denied any wrongdoing, and say they will fight the accusations, which could lead to sanctions including a points deduction and potential relegation.
Tebas, who has been frequently critical of the Premier League s wealth, suggested the investigation had dragged its feet however, having first raised the issue in 2017.
Now it is 2023, and nothing has moved on, but suddenly there is an enquiry, he told the Financial Times Business of Football…
Brentford manager Thomas Frank dismissed as “disrespectful” speculation linking him with taking over at Manchester United, and hinted at sticking around at the Gtech Stadium long enough to win silverware.
Uncertainty has arisen over the future of United boss Erik ten Hag since new minority investor Sir Jim Ratcliffe took charge of football operations at Old Trafford.
But Frank has distanced himself from any suggestion he could be in the frame to step in and steer the Ineos rebuild.
“A lot of rumours and links,” he said. “I’ve said it before in other situations, I think it’s disrespectful to Erik ten Hag. He is doing everything he can to do well for Manchester United.”

It was all that was missing: a Lionel Messi goal. The rest of Saturday s Copa del Rey final was following a predictable, popular script.
Barcelona were winning. Athletic Bilbao were losing. Again.
For the second time this month, for the sixth time in succession, the final was a step too far for poor Athletic.
No club have won the Copa more times than Barca this their 31st triumph but for a long time that was a table topped by the team from Bilbao.
Athletic sit second on the list, with 23 wins, but none after 1983-84.
They beat Barca in the 1984 final at the Santiago Bernabeu and there has been nothing but misery for Athletic in their favourite competition ever since.
April 2021, with two opportunities, was surely the time for that run to e…
Werder Bremen have sacked coach Florian Kohfeldt and appointed Thomas Schaaf as they bid to avoid the Bundesliga relegation play-off for a second straight season.
Kohfeldt was relieved of his duties following Saturday s 2-0 defeat to Augsburg, Werder s eighth in nine league games.
Having taken one point from a possible 27, Werder are in the relegation play-off spot, a point adrift of Arminia Bielefeld and one ahead of Cologne, meaning they can still be automatically relegated to the 2. Bundesliga.
Kohfeldt helped Werder avoid the drop last season as they narrowly came through a play-off with Heidenheim.
But he will not have the chance to secure safety this time around, with Werder installing legendary coach Schaaf for the final game of the season against …
Manchester United have improved to the extent they are ready to win trophies, according to star playmaker Bruno Fernandes.
The Red Devils finished runners-up in the Premier League last season, recording consecutive top-four finishes for the first time since 2013, but suffered shoot-out heartbreak against Villarreal in the Europa League final.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has strengthened the team ahead of the new season, securing the services of Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund and agreeing a deal for the transfer of Raphael Varane from Real Madrid.
With upgrades in two areas of need, Fernandes, who scored 18 times and provided 12 assists in the league last term, is excited by the threat United could pose next season.
Obviously I think, as always, we have a…
